In this course, students will learn the basics of the federal legislative process and develop an understanding of the fundamentals of how courts interpret statutes in a variety of areas of law. Students will focus on applying the courts’ techniques, learning to make arguments in favor of or against particular interpretations of a given statute based on the specific techniques courts use, and recognizing the relative strength of different arguments.

• Learn and apply the fundamentals statute interpretation by the courts
• Employ the techniques of statutory interpretation to interpret statutes
• Practice making arguments in favor of or against particular interpretations of a given statute based on the specific techniques courts use
